More Paddle Boarding Tips

We asked some experienced paddle boarders for their top paddle boarding tips – here’s what they wished they knew when they started out:

1. Check for a cord

Paddle boards should come with a cord to attach the board to your leg – this is important, in case you fall off, as it will stop the board floating away and getting lost. So if you don’t have a cord, get one!

2. Use an electric pump

Using a foot pump to pump up your paddle board can wear you out before you’ve even begun. So to have the best paddle boarding experience, go for an electric pump. And if hiring, don’t worry – your paddle board will typically be provided already pumped up.

3. Always check the tides

If where you are paddle boarding is affected by tides, and the tide is going out, it can take you away from the shore fast. This means you could have trouble getting back to safety, so is something to be aware of – don’t get caught out!

4. Get a waterproof phone case

Get a waterproof phone case so that you can take your phone and make a call in case you get into trouble with the tides, or anything else!

5. Wash your board off with fresh water

Each time you paddle board, be sure to wash your board off with fresh water, as salt water can damage the plastic over time.

6. Invest in a dry bag

Dry bags are especially designed for paddle boarders, and are great for storing things like your shoes, a towel, sunblock and drinking water.

7. Don’t leave valuables on the shore

Never leave anything valuable on the shore unattended – so if you’re leaving your shoes behind, make sure they aren’t your best pair!

8. Check the wind speed

As a beginner, wind can be trouble – so check the forecast and be aware anything above 9-10mph (or 8 knots) can cramp your paddle boarding style. Even experienced paddle boarders tell us they don’t go out in wind speeds over 15mph,
